MICHAEL TAROMINA, ESQ.
TOPIC: Ethics and Safety

Wednesday, February 24, 2016 (5:00-9:45pm)

Michael Taromina, Esq. is the Chair of the NCCAOM Professional Ethics and Disciplinary Committee and co-author of the Code of Ethics, Grounds for Discipline and Procedures for Upholding Professional Conduct. He has an extensive background of legal representation, education and advocacy for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine throughout the country.

Course Description:
In the sensitive, highly-regulated, highly-competitive field of health care, an ethical misconduct complaint, safety violation/citation or lawsuit is not always a result of a practitioner's intentionally bad behavior or lapse of judgment. Experienced and careful AOM practitioners routinely find themselves facing the prospect of damaging professional disciplinary actions, safety violations and/or litigation because they simply failed to receive proper training and utilize effective risk management strategies to maintain a lawful, ethical and safe practice. This program will begin with a detailed overview of the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) newly revised (effective 1/1/2016) Code of Ethics, Grounds for Professional Discipline and Procedures for Upholding Professional Conduct. From there, analysis will be conducted of the relevant state codes, laws and regulations impacting an AOM practice. Attendees will learn the common ethical, safety and legal pitfalls from real AOM cases throughout the country and effective risk management, safety and problem prevention strategies from an expert attorney with decades of experience in the field of AOM.

Topics covered will include:
  • In-depth analysis of real legal, criminal, safety, and ethical cases
  • Overview of existing and emerging trends of ethics and safety risk for AOM providers
  • Understanding the interrelationship between state and NCCAOM requirements
  • Establishing and maintaining proper safety manuals and strategies
  • Avoiding common ethical and safety pitfalls for well-intentioned practitioners

Course Fee:
$65 for Practitioners, $50 for ESATM Alumni, $35 for ESATM Alumni in attendance of meeting prior to CEU (4-5pm), $30 for current acupuncture students
